The anticipation of summer isn’t complete without a trip to a cabin, or maybe even a tent pitched in the woods.  These are where summer memories are made and last a lifetime and then passed down to our kids.  The musty smell of opening the door for the first time in spring and picking up where we left off last fall. Combing through the woods to see if the fort is still there, usually a tipi of sticks stacked against each other, and most kids just sit in it for two minutes, if even.  That’s before kicking off shoes and wading through the shallow water looking for seashells that washed up.  The fort can use some decorating after all.  There’s so much to do before night falls, and it usually involves going out to the dock with a fishing rod and catching a couple of crappies, perch or walleye and cleaning them.  Shore lunch is delicious, and it’s the dinner of dreams.

The shore lunch is cooked around a campfire with family and friends around.  People around the campfire can change over time.  People come and go, some are lost, and some have other responsibilities.  It’s always important to take a picture occasionally, so remember to take out a camera, prop it up with a can of pop or beer, set the timer, and make sure that everyone gets in the shot.  Yes, there’s a time and place for the formal photo, but the picture by the lake is the one that triggers the memories.  The photos by the lake are the pictures of fish caught that are displayed at graduation parties.  The picture of fishing with grandpa fades with time hanging in the hallway.  There’s always the picture of dad falling down while waterskiing.  My favorite has always been the picture of mom shrieking while dad holds out fish bait when she’s trying to read her book on the boat.  The kid that cast too far out and has their fishing line stuck in the tree.  Some of the fishing line is still in that tree somewhere.    I’m from Minnesota, so cabins are generally in woody areas by a lake, but they can be anywhere.   Some people have cabins in the mountains, and others are by water on the ocean.  Wherever your cabin is, make sure you make a trip this summer.
